It's all up to you and a trust. There's not something exactly like an invoice through steam gifts but you can see who sent it, especially if they stay on your friends list iirc
I have much the same hesitancy about taking money for my art, but doing a goods transaction (in my case, Bandcamp purchases for my art) alleviates my hesitancy more.
Something about "gift me a thing and Ill repay you in a quick little doodle" (depending on how expensive the thing is) just feels better
