Because atmospheric physics (Rayleigh scattering) doesn't produce it in reality. Having a full Moon in the same part of sky as a twilight is also physically impossible. So the painter is taking a LOT of artistic licence here. 🤷‍♂️ - ThreadSky

But there is an additional effect which can sometimes inject a strong green illumination into the twilight sky: airglow.

So maybe I was being hard on the artist - he might have experienced a strong airglow night! 2/2

You rarely see twilight with a complete rainbow gradient, ROYGBIV, like the picture shows. To isolate green from scattered white light (sunlight from below the horizon), both the blue & red ends would have be significantly reduced; scattering can't do that. At best you might see greenish-white. 1/2

I've read a bit about it, and yeah it sounds plausible. I personally have never seen aurora around here but some people say they have so I think airglow is a thing too. The more you know 🌠

I don't know much about that, but I live quite up north and we have this green/red sky at morning at the end of the winter. It's quite a sight when there are feathery clouds reflecting pink and gold
