I think it is just cultural progress.

Look how people with mental differences were treated not just in media but in real life in the 90s and 2000s. It doesn't make it ok but we should make room for nuances of culture at the time. Humans are allowed to screw up and learn from those mistakes.

Fair enough. Maybe people go for a certain look for untrustworthiness and because we are so used to seeing that look used, to portray Jews, seeing it in other contexts reminds us of the many times we have seen it used for Jews. That's an interesting thought too.
