UIUC has been mascot-less since 2007
In 2020 the student body voted to adopt a new mascot (the Kingfisher) but admins downplayed the referendum, presumably hoping it'd go away as folks graduated.

-school colors (orange and blue)
-badass aggressive bird
-easy to replicate their chatter call with a snare drum at pep rallies
-native species that nests on campus
-would be the only NCAA mascot that's explicitly female (males don't have orange)
-not racist (like our old mascot)
The kingfisher looks great, I hope they can get it adopted!
(Random aside: as someone who grew up in the area, Urbana-Champaign just sounds weird.)
I’m still cross-posting to the other site and the amount of harassment I’m getting from folks who are really invested in the old racist mascot is… something
