Lets be accurate here. The SOVIETS only got involved with fighting Germany afer they were invaded. Before that they were friends. The soviets were being smashed and relied on a lot of help from western nations to stay in the fight. Modern Russia does love to try and steal all the glory though.

No it wasn't. The EU was founded 1st Nov 1993. The EU has never had its own military. NATO was created in 1948 for the specific purposed of maintaining peace due to the threat of the Soviet Union.
