Needs must! Did you and your friends have fun playing your reverse engineered D&D?

The first game that I designed was “Dungeons and Dragons”
It was 1976, I read a detailed review, was enthralled but couldn’t afford D&D on my pocket-money, so I wrote one page of reverse-engineered rules, and ran dungeon-exploring games for my friends for 6 months!

From what I recall we only had a six sided dice, and in the sample dungeon in the review we saw +1 swords and +1 armour, so it was just roll 1d6 plus your magic bonuses against a monsters 1d6 plus its bonuses and winner takes all 😀
Then I bought Greyhawk, and a couple of fanzines…
The first whole game that i bought was Metamorphosis Alpha, and when AD&D came out we moved to that. Still have a soft spot for those early rules!
