You may have heard me mention that we’ve been doing a follow-up study of our 2020 diffusion chain study which compared how autistic groups, non-autistic groups and mixed groups share information and build rapport (published in @journalautism.bsky.social https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1362361320919286)

In both studies, we used something called a diffusion chain. This is a bit like the game “telephone”. We had groups of participants and told one person in each group a story. They shared it with another person, who shared it with another person, and so on, across the whole group

We tested how information was shared in three different types of groups – groups where everyone was autistic, groups where everyone was non-autistic, and groups where participants alternated between autistic and non-autistic.

In the original study, we found that autistic and non-autistic groups shared a similar amount of information, but that mixed groups shared less information. We wanted to find out if this effect generalised to a larger and more diverse sample.

We also wanted to find out if

1) Knowing whether you were in an autistic, non-autistic or mixed group made a difference

2) The content of the information (whether it was a fictional story or a passage of factual information) shared made a difference.

What feels a bit strange to me about this piece of research is that I assume that within autistic individuals the functioning of social (and other) cognition varies a lot. Thus it seems suspicious to me that autists are treated as one uniform group.
