If we're talking apocalypse-prepping, something to be included in both "non-perishable food" and "easily traded" is salt. Salt has numerous uses, stores well so long as you keep it dry, and is hella valuable to anyone who doesn't have any.

(only downside with salt is it’s not easily hidden on one’s person in the quantities necessary to be worth taking in a “you have ten minutes to gather your things” situation)
