I really enjoyed it and the sequel has similar themes but for femininity in those times & places & cultures. If you ever want to get hit with the ‘gender is a social construct and it has real effects socially & psychologically but it also isn’t everything about everyone’ hammer it’s so good for that
It’s all very yin and yang (kinda literally) and the protagonists of each novel are foils for each other (also they have a not-so-secret shared foil in a self-hating gay eunuch with immense political power who needs therapy in the absolute worst way and has neither access nor interest in it)
(I enjoy characters where you’re like ‘in theory someone could fix you but in your reality and under your own power that is literally the opposite of what will happen & everyone and yourself will probably make you worse’. …Yes, I am a well-known Tuon Enjoyer, weird how that happened)
