I saw another article where something similar was being forced on John Deere tractor owners. Great way to make money. When doing repairs on my equipment always a problem when you need a SST special service tool. I usually did a work around rather than spending $$ on a infrequently needed tool.

Right to repair should not even be a thing. If you purchase something you should be able to do whatever you want with it. Now, if it’s under warranty and you want the company to fix it for free that’s a different story. Otherwise, companies should have no say in what you do with anything you own.

As a product manager of complex scientific devices, while this would be nice, it just isn’t feasible to have 100% uptime. Then the costs of redundancy would make this impractical.

You can shoot for 99% but 100% is virtually a mathematical impossibility.

This particular case is crazy where the vendor trained & certified technicians to do maintenance & repair. It is hard to not see that as a money grab.

Otherwise, I do urge a bit of caution with the desire to allow anyone to do things in such a situation due to lack of training & liability issues.

I’ve managed the development & introduction of pretty complex scientific instrumentation.

I have a vague sense here.

My point stands that there can be uncertain product reliability and performance when techs without training or certified parts do things.

Again, *this* seems like a money grab.

Hospitals should be reporting this company to the FTC for anti-trust law violations.

And anyone who received a certification from them should be refunded any money paid.
