It's not so much as Mexico wants to be all organic so much as they don't want the same legal issues US farmers run into when using Big Ag seed. Frankly I don't blame them

Because of the previous losses in court last year. It stops becoming a Mexican policy and is just a law that's not governed under the USMC. This is more about US modified corn than it is modified corn in general. I'm not agreeing with it, but the US had Mexico over a barrel legally.

As it was domesticated there, there's a ton of cultural baggage around corn. A big cash crop for poor farmers in the central part of Mexico is Huitlacoche, a corn fungus. Its a Mexican delicacy and quite expensive. It does not grow on disease resistant corn strains.

Most of the GM crops in commercial production were modified to not be killed by herbicides sprayed all over the top of them. Not my idea of 'what's for dinner'.

It might be due to the economic reality of it. GMOs are also patented and trademarked, and it's illegal to reuse the seeds because someone owns it. By banning them from the whole country, you protect seeds and farming itself unfortunately.

The issue with GM crops is more that they are often locked behind copyright by the companies producing the seed. They are VERY litigious as well. I don’t blame Mexico for locking them out of the market for that reason.

of your country is to ban it all outright. It sucks and I agree that there are benefits to it but especially in a country like Mexico which their farming industry is greatly susceptible to being taken advantage of by big, mostly American corpos it is the right thing to do.

Yes, but you are paying more for seed, every season, from them. You can't hold on to seed from the prior harvest for next season either because of contracts or because of the modification making the corp sterile.
