Ableism works when you pretend you’ll never be disabled. Everyone is an injury away from a change in their abilities. That or the natural aging process. Empathy & compassion scare some because they’d rather pretend that disabled people are others that they’ll never be.

I did some training on -isms and they coined the term “temporarily able” because, as you say, at some point we are all likely to be disabled- even if it’s old age.

In some Cdn provinces the most severely disabled of all, live up to 50% BELOW the poverty line & Do NOT, as many believe, have all their medical expenses &/or accommodations paid for...🙄

Excellent point. As a fellow Canadian I’m always having to educate people that we don’t have pharmacare, dental care etc and that many paramedical expenses are also not covered (hello compression socks and wrist braces)
