I don’t understand why people are supporting Chinese production wholeheartedly. Their environmental impact and human right violations alone are enough for me to hope for production to move elsewhere

Well, since Trump has gutted the EPA, the USA is about to become just as bad as China when it comes to the environmental impact by business. If production moves, I hope it moves to Canada and the EU, where there are still good laws protecting the environment.
It sounds like people are stuck on “fuck Trump” mode (which I agree he’s horrible) even though China is a major offender. It’s an odd thing to be rooting for China in any case. There are other solutions besides hoping either party succeeds
One does not have to condone Chinese production in order to acknowledge that it's vital to the US economy and that adding a 104% surcharge will hurt a lot of people who have come to rely on it. Production doesn't move elsewhere overnight
That’s fair and true. I’m mostly surprised by people who seem to be so on board with Chinese production given the major downsides of their practices. I get it, Trump is a pos but we don’t need to root against our own interests. Relying on cheap Chinese production is an issue imo.
Relying on cheap foreign production is also what most of the Western world's wealth is based on. You cannot fix this by just raising tariffs to astronomical levels. You have to provide an alternative or people will be forced to just pay more for the same goods while still buying foreign production.
you don't fix supply and demand with tariffs you just create shortages. and people suffer. americans are going to suffer the most from trump's tariffs.
western economies thrive on a constant flow of goods and raw materials imported from china. if trump really applies such tarifs it's the end of the american economy as you know it. everyone makes an example of iPhones' prices but it every sector that will be impacted.
Production can be spread out which will help developing countries. We sold out to China so we can get things for cheap. I think it’s gross to say we need cheap goods from them so we can enjoy ourselves as the primary argument. I just don’t get why people are going so hard for China in this thread
you can adjust policies and agreements to provoke a gradual change. trump is just burning bridges and the whole town will starve for a while. most people don't stand for china but can't condone such insanity.
I understand where you’re coming from but is Chinese production absolutely necessary? Will anyone starve, die, etc? Maybe I’m looking on from an ivory tower but maybe things we absolutely need will be made elsewhere quickly. I’m willing to be without cheap conveniences for a while to find out.
