This is my far one of my biggest fears, that the effort to smash the state isn't going to be just an internal one, but that the foes within leave the gates undefended and allow in outside villains too.

One vulnerability at CISA is the fact that some people were hired through the Cybersecurity Talent Management System, launched in 2021, which makes new hires probationary for three years.

Those folks joined through CTMS because of perks like higher pay. Now they're much easier to lay off.

There is a lot of frustration inside CISA about how leadership is handling this situation.

One example comes from an email that a laid-off staffer sent to colleagues early this morning about what he called the "Elephant In The Room" of leaders failing to protect employees.

In addition to the cruelty of these summary firings, it's maddening. It's so hard to recruit the talent we desperately need to keep Americans safe, and now to lose it.There will be a scrambled effort to bring in talent following the next big cyber incident, but it will take years. Not smart.
