One exciting part of being such a fragmentary writer and piecing a novel together, kind of like a puzzle, is that you discover parts in old drafts that actually fit and solve problems that you didn't know of at the time. Enjoying this wild process.

Yes! It makes me feel like the novel (a product of my brain over years, through many writing sessions) is smarter than any one instance of writing! A very cool feeling.
I’ve had the rather surreal situation that I wrote a random scene three years ago for a non-existent story… last summer I had an idea for a character and scenario, which was going nowhere until I accidentally found that scene in my junk pile. 200k words later and the story is still going!
