Oh yeah at the end of the Haitian Revolution France strongarmed (at gunpoint) Haiti into agreeing to pay reparations to France for the loss of land and slaves, and then (because of course Haiti didn't have the money) forced them to take loans from French banks at insane interest rates.
All of this was done with the very active support of the US, including Founding Father and true lover of both slaves and slavery, Thomas Jefferson. Haiti didn't make the final debt payment until 1947, 125 years after the revolution.
Haiti is what it is today because of the insanely violent institutional racism of France and the United States, which as usual went hand-in-hand with those nations' self-appointed God-given right to extract whatever they wanted from the country.
This is where I’d usually have some snappy quip to spit… but really all I can do is shake my head. The scars of colonialism & slavery run deep… & it pisses me off so much how the modern benefactors pretend like the debt doesn’t need to be repaid bc “”*I* never owned slaves/colonized””
These are matters that do fascinate me.
In fact, another interpretation is available regarding the Haiti’s 1825 debt.
Would you accept to gently debate about that please ?
Same thing for colonialism and slavery… .
