It’s a mixture of a lot of things. It’s being passively comfortable with the way the world was almost 100 years ago. Trump didn’t betray Ukraine simply because he’s been a Nazi from birth….
Reagan cut the education budget by 65%. Now 60% are reading & writing at a 5th Grade level. 1 in 3 of these are at an 8-year-old-level. Combine that with widespread hunger and you don't get a lot of learning. Hungry children don't learn.
For 25+ years, the US (and Canada too, frankly) have worked on developing a culture of ignorance. People celebrate reality TV stars, and influencers, but take the piss out of doctors, educators, and thinkers.
