I'm a mathematician, and I was fortunate to have exceptional maths teachers all through my schooling. Meeting people at parties, invariably folk will say "I was never good at maths" & then describe some dreadful teacher they had that put them off. There are no bad maths students, only bad teachers.

Both my sons were weaker at Maths than their English based subjects. Both were prepared to accept it was a natural weakness in their abilities. I insisted they work harder on their weakness than just going with their strengths and each of them turned it around. Sometimes the harder path pays off.

I know a woman who said she wasn't taught maths properly until she got to uni & a teaching degree. Worked in computer science, tertiary level

It’s a few decades back now - but I had multiple teachers tell me I shouldn’t be doing a maths/physics/chemistry course load for HSC - I should be doing accounting and typing and home economics. I was the second highest ranked student in the school. Imagine what I could have done with support.

My daughter was good at maths early on. I spent years begging teachers for extension programs or even just extra or harder exercises. The only result we got was 1 term of maths lunchtime club in year 4 (she was the only girl). I will never know if gender played a role in that though.

Some are late developers too - of young for their class.
