At the National Library of Scotland, you can explore Darwin’s correspondence with his publisher, John Murray, including a remarkable 1859 letter where Darwin first pitched 'On the Origin of Species'.
In it, he warns Murray the book’s ideas “might not prove at all palatable” to Victorian society.
Our John Murray Archive holds:
📜 Darwin’s original 1859 letter outlining his manuscript
📰 The only surviving office copy of On the Origin of Species, marked up for future editions
✉️ More than 200 letters between Darwin and Murray
At first I thought 200 letters suggested a pair of obsessives but I suppose Darwin couldn't just ring up and ask "Your note on page 205 is smudged: what did it say?"
The Darwin Archive is a collaboration with @theul.bsky.social, @nhm-london.bsky.social, @linneansociety.bsky.social, English Heritage, and @rbgkew.bsky.social
#AlexanderGrahamBell came from Scotland as well. He was President of the National Geographic Society. #DavidGFairchild was his SIL and #botanist who brought #kudzu to US, and it is on every continent except Antarctica. #Kudzu is related to #soybeans & #snowpeas. #Kudzu is #food. #KudzuRecipes
