one of the bishops on my mission was dealing with a ward list of 500 people and 50 showing up to church and he went through the list and methodically contacted everyone like “do you want us visiting you, do you want to stay on the list but with no contact, or do you want me to send a letter and get

We had a bishop like this for a while though I'm pretty sure the primary motivation to get inactives off the roster so that activity and home/visiting teaching rates weren't so abysmal. When the stake president caught wind of it they weren't happy. 😅

The strategy thereafter shifted to just finding the people on the rosters who had disappeared (moved away, etc) and getting their records out of the ward.

Our ward in San Antonio had over 700 on the roster. They tried to make contact with all of them. So many had moved and not told the church. Sometimes they would show up again for a few weeks if they needed some financial help.

When I was an EQP there, in the 90s, I told the missionaries I would do splits with them for their appointments but if they fell through they would come with me and we would go through the ward roster to find people.

I was in the EQP in Charlotte in the 90s, and we had 650 on the rolls, with 130 active. We spent so much time trying to track people down. Many moved on without leaving word. Others simply “forgot” that they were ever members.

There was a brief time when I was YWP that I had LCR access to delete name of record folks who’d had no contact with the church from the records. I did indeed use it.
