Having watched a fair bit of Tour de France, it seems to me that sometimes a rider will put on a burst of acceleration, and the other riders just have nothing left in the tank to answer it with. You can see the rider behind her try to keep up, but presumably she just didn't have it in her.

I guess what I'm saying is that the other riders probably did try to chase, but very quickly realized they weren't going to be able to keep up.

Also, they're better off trying to conserve what little energy they have left and be in the race for silver or bronze, rather than using it up failing in an attempt to catch the leader and then being overtaken by the other two before the finish line.

Yeah it's exacty that. They tried, gassed out, and then you hope maybe in a couple more kilometers you find a second (twelfth?) wind that lets you close the gap.

But at that point I think everyone was shocked ANYONE had a sprint left in them.

There's also some possible strategy (didn't watch this race) in that she could have been drafting the leader pack for hours, and that's why she was able to put on such an effective attack that late in the race: she didn't have the same energy output for 4 hours they did? 🤷

My view: 4's a crowd and there are only 3 medals. To chase they would have to work together but the risk is if someone doesn't pull their weight and you blow up your legs and then get left with no podium/medal.

The Dutch commentator said "they (the three) know if Faulkner's gone she's gone".

In team based cycling you would have the domestiques helping with the chase to save the legs of the leader/sprinter. But this isn't a team event.
