The southern resident orcas have a VERY high calf mortality rate due to food scarcity/toxins; both are exacerbated in first time moms, and reports are that this is their mom’s first calf, so we’ll need to wait a while to see if they continue to be spotted. But one of last year’s calves was seen!

I believe the calf who from last year who was spotted this week is the last one I posted about (J-62); she was a surprise late season arrival and seems to be growing well, which is great news!
