I always thought "DONT WALK / WALK" was a strange choice of words for a pedestrian crossing. Surely "STOP / CROSS" or any of several alternatives would be better.
Honestly, first thing I did in New York in 2008 was to check these were actually real. And most of them seemed to have gone.
