Caitlin Clark did for sports what Donald Trump did for politics: Brought in a lot of new people who had never paid attention before and have no idea how anything works.

It’s just a weird comparison. I would also suggest that many new WNBA fans are knowledgeable about basketball and have recently become interested in professional women’s b-ball, because the level of the game is so much higher (which relates to the poor officiating which hasn’t kept up).
I think Christian is basically correct. For another thing I reckon you'll find to be a "weird comparison" is I am reminded of a lot of Serena Williams fans were Serena fans but not real tennis fans. Hence, their belief that Sharapova was terrible (even though she won 6 grand slam titles).
So, like Christian said, there are a lot of Clark fans that know nothing about basketball. I get that conclusion from when I used to be 'Caitlin Clark Twitter' before leaving that site. Also, just peruse YT comments on videos from yesterday's game. Just one terrible take after another!
I’m sure there are some fans that don’t know much. Nonetheless, the popularity of women’s b-ball has grown significantly in the college game. The NCAA women’s tournament is now as popular (if not more so) than the men’s which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
