I checked with the eng team after seeing this. "Maintenance mode" in this case just means new feature work by Googlers is paused while they work on other parts of Flutter, but breaks will be fixed.
It's not "maintenance mode" like the video games I loved as a child are in maintenance mode. š

I also think we should provide this kind of status more often using consistent language across repos.
I feel like the stigma comes from the JS (frontend) world where browsers evolve so fast that people started associating āmaintenanceā with ādead projectā
