Northern Ireland Peace Process with a majority of about 5? True, there was Edwina Currie and the Cones Hotline, but my recall is that he was decent, honest, and got stuff done without the UK imploding. Could do with more like him now.
The fact that he was Thatcher’s choice put me off at the time. And I think if he’d handled Maastricht and the ‘bastards’ in his party better, we might never have ended up with Brexit.
I think his perceived greyness at the time has done him no favours, but he did still manage to keep the 'bastards' at bay despite his tiny majority, a fear Cameron failed at, despite his far bigger majority.
TBH, that was part of the appeal of Starmer after all the pantomime villainy that the Tories threw at us. Competence and honesty seem to be in short supply in politics these days.
Cameron was both arrogant& idiotic. The whole lot of them treated the referendum as a game, Johnson& Gove jockeying to get kudos from right wingers, not expecting to win. No plan from any of them for what would happen if Remain lost. All should have been charged with misconduct in public office
And that rather explains why I have more time for Major. Sure, neither dynamic but without faults, but honest, principled and competent. A lot to be said for that.
