I remember seeing a study where it was determined that *certain people* preferred a situation in which they were worse off, but everyone *else* had it even worse than they did, to a situation where they had it better but were not on top.

My intro sociology prof asked the class if they wanted to skip the final, and most people voted yes. (I honestly can’t remember how I voted, now)

He followed up with, ok come talk to me on the way out today and I’ll assign you a grade for it based on how I feel you’ve participated in class.

There was a lot of panic. I don’t know what he offered people that were gonna get crap grades but this was a hundred-plus person lecture hall not a small class.

Important point, he was a Latino guy who had served time for manslaughter so the panic was all white dudes who’d been slacking.

Our section leaned very heavy lower income students, more BIPOC etc. The other section skewed higher income, more suburban white kids. Empathy is taught as a child & sustained by experience. We wanted everyone to pass, they were in competition with each other. And again this was only 10 points

I couldn't have come up with a single good reason to vote against such a measure.
This may be because of how our education system is structured though. It would hurt none of our class but make no overall difference to our competition needs at any point in the process.

For most people that 10 points was only going to be a little boost (we found out later that we had a C/ B average with only a few outliers) but people weren't willing to give away the grade equivalent of a dollar

Anyway, I don't know that anyone failed, but our section had better grades, and our professor made their point about the cost of putting competition over community.

The funny part was people from the other section complaining that it was unfair we got the extra points. Even at the last lecture, they refused to learn the very obvious answer. I wonder how those people vote now...
