I've been thinking this more and more - the tariffs are a twisted version of Europe's VAT - except we get nothing for it at all. We actually get worse and less government services and functioning.
VAT = Value Added Tax. Back when I was a kid it used to be called what it actually is: Purchase Tax.

So, the US will no longer be a country of innovators. This will be (and already is) happening in China & Europe. The US becomes a country full of consumers, mostly working service jobs, buying stuff designed, invented, produced elsewhere. And the US gov’t will tax all these imports to make revenue.
