I mean I guess I appreciate the person who doesn’t follow me waiting until the next morning to parachute into my replies to tell me all about the abuses of the catholic church but it’s still pretty weird

My mother works with a nonprofit that works with the victims of sexual assault and I'm very sorry to tell people that this crime that they believe is beyond teh moral pale is quite commonplace, can infect virtually any organization with children, and is insidiously pervasive and anonymous
what makes it bad with the catholic church is obviously the role of the institution itself in the cover-up…but the reason that doesn’t happen with other churches is because most of them are atomized/specifically do not have larger institutional control of the movement of clergy, etc
Absolutely it does. There are specific questions about the new Pope and his handling of an event in Peru, not in the misty past but in 2022, that warrants attention, and there's new claims of a pay-off and it looks very messy, though how much is the diocese and how much of it is Peru is hard to tell
The Catholic Church is not unique in this regard, nor is it the only institution that has struggled with it even recently. It has fallen short of its ideals. Its worthy of criticism. The idea that it is fundamentally special or remarkable in some way for having this problem at all is just nonsense.
Yes. Reverends, camp counselors, coaches, family members.
Obviously, the Church should be heavily scrutinized & criticized. But it is also a huge, singular organization whereas that’s not the case with other denominations or types of affiliations.
Also, we're pretty bad as a country re: Child Sexual Abuse. Low prosecution rates, low conviction rates, weak sentences, awful treatment of victims who come forward, etc.
So - as bad as they are - it's not just The Church who has failed kids. We all have work to do here.
