I have absolutely no clue…my wildly uninformed guess is there was some sort of engine malfunction which is why the tugboat was trying to get to them and they just ran out of time

Yeah, concur. That's the stern coming towards the camera looks like some loss of control. That tug is coming in fast but too late.
