The Academy is poised to give Nolan best picture for Oppenheimer. But Godzilla Minus One is far and away the better, and more culturally honest of the two. It is the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, but I don’t expect the Academy to honor that.

I saw it last week, and I agree with you. Easily one of my top favourite films of the year, and the best Godzilla film since, well, ever! So much heart!
It’s a masterpiece with the way it builds on ‘54 and every significant blockbuster from Jaws to Jurassic Park. It’s extra special watched right after watching ‘54
I would have called it a top 10 movie if one of the ex-military guys had said “we did terrible things and this is our chance to atone” during the big scene. One hint that the Japanese military were not great to other nations. Great Godzilla movie otherwise.
My college kid and I watched a bunch of classic films for a class he was taking, and then saw G-1, and both of us walked out of the theater going "they put The Bicycle Thief into my Godzilla movie and it was fucking incredible"
The basic assumption that EVEN IN THE EVENT OF KAIJU human relationships and personal character are the most interesting and enduring thing transforms the whole story and reclaims the essential metaphorical nature of Gojira
What got to me is that he (sorry I forget his name) was supposed to be a kamikaze, but he found something else legitimately moral, defending the people he loved from the monster of war.
