i don't think most people today have any real idea what things like child mortality pre-vaccines really meant.

i have friends who have lost two children. they have been permanently altered by that experience.

that was basically everyone until 100 years ago.

Very easy for me to imagine. 😬 Every kid with moderate to severe CHD. Every kid with diabetes. Vaccines obviously are game changers, but there are so many things people take for granted these days.

This is what people miss about getting to old age in the past. If you survived your childhood, you had a pretty good chance of living to your 60s; it’s just that a lot of people didn’t get to adulthood.

Safety stuff too, I knew many older people who lost a sibling in childhood from things we safeguard against today: vehicle accidents, drownings, fires, etc etc

Wonder if it's a coincidence that eugenicist "natalist" conferences are getting so much press coverage at the same time policies guaranteed to raise child mortality are being rolled out the door. The maks are really falling off.
