Authors should be made to work 9-5 at desks in bookshops where the general public can see they're not slacking, like those restaurants where you can see the chef https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0qww8xdvnwo

I'm afraid the fact that working from home is becoming part of the culture wars (as the article states) does not bode well for a rational discussion... neither does the fact that expert opinions aren't being taken onto account.
It sounds like he's retired, but that when he was working it was more or less his whole life. If he's talking specifically about retail - article not clear, the argument for being office based is worth listening to. If he means every job that used to be office based than maybe not
Apologies for any confusion; I thought it obvious I was referring to the person saying it, not the lovely chap who held it up (I'm envisioning: at arm's length, with tongs, while holding his nose).
I work on the shop floor in retail, I'd like support roles to match opening hours and if home working encouraged that it would be great, but that's not what's happened. What has happened is even more of an us and them situation which is a bit rubbish.
Real authors would saunter into the bookshop at 9.05 on the way to the gym, pick up a coffee and talk about how easy it is to write 1,000 words per day when you get up at 4.30 to avoid distractions.
I wonder what ASDA supermarket warehouse and checkout staff think of his views of 'real work'. I do hope that this boss has spent his working life doing the kinds of shifts including at the weekend and overnight that constitute their work.
That's what I wonder about closed orders. How do we know they aren't just having fun behind closed doors? Perhaps they should get out and do their work in empty high-street premises so that everyone can see if there is spiritual slacking.

Even in grad school, usually I at least had a subbasement office with an actual door that I only had to share with one or two of my fellow damned.

Will he be doing that himself? Shall we all pop round to his offices and take a quick gander?
Interestingly, further on in the article there is evidence to directly refute his baseless claims.
