Accessible and pleasing system design is part of my work, games are interactive systems with highly constrained rules.

They make really good thought experiments for making other types of interactive systems better. I LOVE trying to figure out why they do or do not work for people.

I did, yeah. The reasons I didn't like Skyrim were the dull color palette, the uninteresting central story (definitely can't live up to being able to go into hell through popup gates and fight daedra), and the visual sameness of all the towns.

The leveling changes bothered me. In Oblivion you learn the skills you use. There is a limit to how much you can learn...

Based on just this little bit - the first (and maybe second) "Gothic" game might be worth looking at. Little jankie, little old, but has the story and visual distinctiveness.

The game is so sick. My favorite method of travel is using the spellmaking to create a fortify acrobatics spell where I can literally just super jump across the map instead of worrying about Silt Striders and teleport spells.
