Does anyone know why cars stopped coming in colors?

Rolling into the weekend with one of the few front wheel drive cars I'd be happy to own, a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado in Tropic Turquoise.

There is a graphic showing the changes in car colors- I’m not able to link here- although that doesn’t answer the why. Maybe it’s the same reason houses stopped coming in colors.

I always thought it was because they started charging way extra for colours other than standard white and one or two others.
