After reading that article.. Oh my GOD - yes, poor manufacturing is bad, but you don't fly the plane if your redundancy is gone! That's like trying to drive a car with a missing steering wheel! The captain's display never worked? Why would you fly that?!

As more than 1,700 737 Max airplanes crisscross the sky, Ed Pierson, a former senior manager at a Max factory, is busy exposing Boeing’s failings. Because of his experience, some people in DC actually listen to him. Also, because he will not—metaphorically and very literally—stop talking.

Pierson remembers the creation of the Max as “chaos.” The production worried him so much he voiced his concerns to the top of Boeing, but nothing changed. Miserable and fearful, he retired in August 2018, in what he described as “abandoning the Titanic.”

A few months after Pierson retired, a TV report caught his attention: Plane crashed in the Java Sea. Lion Air. All 189 passengers and crew killed. A two-month-old Max 8. “Honey, this is a brand-new plane. I was there when it was being made,” Pierson told his wife.

Then in March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines’ ET302, on a four-month old Max, plowed into a field, killing all 157 people aboard. Within days, regulators grounded all Maxes. Pierson studied the reports, met with victims’ families, and spoke publicly on TV and in DC about Boeing’s failures.

Then in 2024, a door plug ripped out of a new Max mid-flight, high above the city of Portland. The cabin lost pressure, passengers strapped on air masks. Alaska Airlines. Suddenly, many of the moves Pierson had wanted for years started to happen.

There's been some good reporting on what likely culprits are. I'm pretty sure John Oliver did a great piece on it & pointed to claims from whistleblowers about productivity metrics being part of the issue, but also shoddy engineering just to get product out to production & lowering production costs.

Word has it the merger w/ Mcdonnell Douglas did the company no favors b/c rather than mostly keeping Boeing upper management, they went w/ the greedy mf's that were folded in & immediately started cutting corners for profits. Profits over lives is the American way, UNTIL Americans DECIDE otherwise.
