I think they are largely "walk down that road to start your journey to London" namings. So we both can be right.

Yeah they're all "direction of London" road, like the A whatever out of Salisbury doesn't go to London but it is the road you start with

On a bored coach journey I noticed as you go west along the A4 out of London you go through a series of "London Road"s coming into each town, and "Bath Road"s going out.

Interesting thing about surnames, loads of people with small town surnames (Bolton, Preston, Carlisle etc) but not many called 'London', for much the same reason.
