(Was very disappointed to discover the real thing after growing up with Grandma whistling this as part of her core morning-housework-accompaniment repertoire)
In my youth we used to do a partsong arrangement but rarely made it to the end as for some reason it made us all convulse with laughter every single time
The friend who led us in song in those days has died, and I can't find that choral arrangement of Maud anywhere online, so it may have passed into history 😥
He failed to ever persuade any of us to perform his other favourite, "Father's A Drunkard And Mother Is Dead"
"While the poem was Tennyson's own favourite (he was known very willingly to have recited the poem in its entirety on social occasions), it was met with much criticism in contemporary circles"
I think he would have got on well with the artist William Etty who used to turn up uninvited to life classes until asked to leave.
Reading Maud out aloud takes HOURS!
