His education was about a 3rd grade level and he did not have his daughters educated which was common for that time. Amelia, on the other hand was highly educated, spoke several languages, played musical instruments, did theater productions and was a published author.

Her published work was compared to the plays & her creativity, syntax were thought to be a major reason. Her education in music, her description of the castle in Denmark (that she had visited) matched the physical place. Shakespeare never visited there. Falcons & musical themes were common themes

Dr Johnson wrote his dictionary in the 1750s because he was sick of the idiosyncratic spelling of written English at the time.
He wanted to standardise it.
Even in the 1841 census names were written as the census taker’s best guess - especially as many working class folk were illiterate.

Having read letters from the Tudor era…yeah, people played fast and loose on spelling even within the same document. And these were people with formal education.

It definitely makes you stretch the reading comprehension muscles! Sometimes I think standardized spelling made us more likely to be reading lazy and incurious.

i think about this when having my middle school students read aloud. sometimes they’ll see a word and just assume it’s one they know. For example, seeing “unequivocally” and instead saying “unequally” or “unbelievably” because they don’t slow down to read. this is in otherwise nondyslexic population
