wasn’t english much more wibbly back then? like spellings of names were NOT set in stone. i just got done with a museum tour that talked about that issue when trying to identify lost boats or artifacts from early settlers in america (same time period as willy shakes)

Even in the 1841 census names were written as the census taker’s best guess - especially as many working class folk were illiterate.
