I was never going to see Lilo and Stitch but Nani gives up custody of Lilo in the movie and I feel that needs to be shared so even less people go to see it.

Hey, no, she does not give up custody, she has it taken away from her! At which point she is free to go to college in California and leave Lilo with their neighbor. 😬
We need to talk about why that family was not receiving wraparound services and Medicaid already?
it just doesn't make sense, unless you're pushing for a way to make breaking up the family "happy". Imperfect (because not "traditional"/white), complicated lives can't be shown to be happy and thriving. Heck, even that she has to go to college in this version!
why weren't there social services to help get Lilo on CHIP after the parents died, or to help Nani navigate everything? why wasn't *she* on Medicaid? were they receiving SNAP benefits? Why couldn't she use the portal-gun to go to class, but live with Lilo?
She got a full scholarship to UCSD and it’s one of the best schools for marine biology in the world. Will set her up really nicely for a successful career in a field she loves. Also, she can come back whenever she want due to alien technology.
I mean, it's fiction, the writers could have given her a full scholarship to UH, or made it so she can use the alien tech to go to class. That they didn't is what we're criticizing. The whole point of Lilo & Stitch (2002) is family and community and their identity as native Hawai'ians.
So it means they can’t step foot off the island? I’m assuming the neighbor is also a native Hawaiian, and Nani keeps the house so seems to be clearly planing to come home. Give her a break, she’s a child too! And she maintains the relationship.
It’s like every time Disney tries to “fix” things in these remakes, all they end up doing is make people realize why the originals worked to begin with.
I really think it’s intentional sometimes. They’ll cast someone who’s a person of color, get us all excited to support, but then also add something else that’ll turn us off to wanting to see it. So then if it somehow does poorly they’ll blame it on the person of color.
I wouldn’t say never. Disney has had peaks and valleys over the past century, and history has shown that whenever they find themselves in a rut they’ll eventually start innovating again.
BUT with this current era that’ll mostly depend on people to stop seeing these damn remakes.
More like she loses custody because she didn’t get health insurance and can’t pay a hospital bill. Imagine that, lack of affordable healthcare impacts people’s lives! Too bad Nani can’t get a better paying job to provide. Oh right, that’s what she is doing by using her time to gain skills.
Ohana means family. Family means fostering your little sister and leaving the state for school even though Hawaii has colleges, but we’ll use a shiny plot device to ignore the implications. It completely defeats the entire premise and it’s horrible writing.
I’m sorry, she does WHAT??? That was her entire character arc, her struggling to keep her remaining family together to prevent the rest of Lilo’s life from being turned upside down, while still being super young herself. What the heck is the point then???
Also maybe that lack of affordable healthcare is a huge force in people’s lives. Because despite her efforts, Nani lost custody because she never got health insurance and couldn’t pay Lilo’s hospital bill.
Maybe that family is more than DNA. Lilo gets the friend she needs in stitch, an alien, and the parental figure she needs from a close neighbor who is capable of parenting. All while staying closely connected to her biological sister who visits frequently and will return home. It takes a village.
two L&S remake defenders in the comments not realizing this film is fiction & the people in charge can help the characters however they want. "No but she [[supposedly]] loses Lilo because she doesn't have health insurance!" How is that better lmao. That's not a happy, good or hopeful ending. LMFAO?
"She can't pay Lilo's hospital bills so they gave her to someone who could!!! It's an improvement!!!" You can't be fucking serious with this shit. This is literally a children's movie and you're like "Yeah in the end her sister doesn't get her back and she's taken away! Kids Love It!"
Fucking dolts
This feels like a person going "Oh the film is "realistic"!!! so that makes it better!" Since when were realistic children's films ever better? 💀 OH YES We all know the point of every custody narrative in kids movies is 'They're split up & lose each other in favor of a fucked up system!' /sarcasm
I keep seeing people in the comments talking about "it's ok because nani can teleport home with alien technology every night!" Like ok?? You want it to be realistic enough to split up the family but not realistic enough to actually visualize the effects of splitting up the family, got it.
As if the original film didn't already address that it required intervention and the help of found family to help keep Lilo and Nani together in the face of an unfair system. The original is far from a perfect film but come on.
Also like, the wildest part to me is like "Ok so take Lilo with you? LMAO" No Lilo can't live with Nani out of state, it's impossible. Nani can't go to school locally there or, you know, take Online classes FROM HOME it's IMPOSSIBLE!!
Like what fucking nonsense, there's always a way and this aint it
So we are just going to change one of the most important parts of the story huh? Gonna just erase the struggle that some real people go through, and completely miss the point of the original movie? Got it.
My son loves Lilo & Stitch. We had annual passes to Disney World for Years and Stitch was always his favorite. I was so disappointed to find out the movie got rid of the criticisms of tourism, Nani wasn't Hawaiian, got rid of the genderfluid alien, and then BROKE UP OHANA. Oh hell no. We will not.
That’s really too bad that you aren’t taking her. I’d hope most kids would see that this is a much healthier ending. It’s balanced because Nani is still very much in Lilo’s life, but has the support to follow her own dreams too. And lilo is with a close neighbor who is better prepared to parent.
Not to mention they have alien technology that allows Nani to teleport home every night, which is no different than her having a crappy local job. Within a few years she will be highly successful and can move back to Hawaii or bring Lilo to Cali.
I guess my experience with foster care, adoption, family and the history of privilege, colonialism and a culture that punishes poverty- this ending would give my kids nightmares

Why did they have to change a good story.
Sending Nani away, putting Lilo into the state system, that undermines the very core themes of Lilo & Stitch.
There were other ways to update the story that don't destroy what we loved.
Ex. Snow White and now this.

But hey, haters gonna hate. It's all they have...
