I feel like there are many much more iconic state shapes.

Come on, nearly a third of Australia is a single state of a massive 2.5 million km²!

Most people should be able to instantly recognise that one while they'd probably not be able to find NJ on a map of the US states.

No one outside the East Coast of the US would look at that shape and say, "ah, New Jersey". Texas would probably be the most recognizable state shape, for sure. But Jersey? Middle of the pack.
