I have this weird fascination with the fact that old songs are still played at football stadiums pre match. Stuff from the 80s, 90s and 00s. When you went to football in the 90s they weren’t playing Herman’s Hermits and Mud
Though I imagine with songs from the 00s and below there's a greater chance the lyrics are going to be kid-friendly, rather than have slang/innuendo you're too old to understand (apparently Sabrina Carpenter's 'Taste' is not about flavoured lipbalm?)
Are you forgetting that we went backwards to Sweet Caroline? There's an entire backlog of songs you can shout without understanding or actually listening to
Same. I had no idea.
I thought I knew all about such things.
Like how the theme for Pigeon Street was written by Benni Lees of the Stepney Sisters.
Thank you.
There’s a lovely story that someone from Show of Hands once said on the radio. During the Six Nations there was a ‘song off’ between Irish and English supporters in a London pub. The Irish won easily when the English fans were reduced to singing American Pie.
Ah, but fellow oldsters, had a housefull of kids the other weekend and they were all belting out Rocketman and Life on Mars after a few scoops. So maybe delving even further into the past is the acceptable way forward.
It's mutated into something more bruised & vulnerable but Sam Fender's 'Seventeen Going Under' with it's 'Oh-ooh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh' refrain is definitely one. Rang throughout the Toon on the day of 'Fender Fest'.
I never knew what it was or heard any other part of the song for more than ten years, it was just that bit which came out of the gate sounding like a gormless lad anthem from the first time I heard it.
We live on a road between a uni halls and a student pub and we are Ofsted 'blessed' with a chorus of Don't Look Back in Anger at chucking out time, so I concur wholeheartedly.
It's never going to be updated, we're in too fragmented a media landscape, people aren't going to pick something up off their tiktoks, same as the way Christmas music got stuck in the 1950s Lads Songs will be in permanent 1996

Thinking Wizbit is entering the George universe...the crossover potential is huge
