The repression of trans people is not, by and large, a grassroots outpouring of hatred from the American people. It's something that's been carefully planted and tended over years by a handful of media people and their pet reporters.

I keep thinking about the 90'/2000's with RuPaul's talk show, Nirvana in dresses at the VMA's, Dennis Rodman wearing a bridal gown. The straights were having a fun quirky moment but now the reality has set in that they'll have to respect and coexist with ordinary trans people and they hate it.

I’ve always seen it as a carefully calculated right-wing attempt to relitigate gay rights… They lost the cultural fight there, so they used attacks on on trans rights as an inroad to attack LGBTQ rights as a whole
