It had not occurred to them, for example, that a lot of people who say they want "border security" in the abstract might be horrified at the practical reality of trying to carry out mass deportations.

I think what people miss here is that expelling people of other than Northern European lineage is entirely motivated by their white supremacist fanaticism, not by any concern over an invasion, or crime, or drugs. So: THEY DO NOT CARE whether the public is horrified. They have an agenda!
Maybe it did occur to them, they just don’t care about public opinion like Dems do. Especially if they’re not planning to have fair elections ever again?
I agree and yet one of the few things where Trump capitulated in his first term was the horrific child separation at the border policy. It was a horrific stain, outstripping many others.

Why no one framed or messaged this point is beyond me.
Oh, definitely - in the present circumstances I take a bit of solace that the “why don’t they just get in line and wait their turn?” sentiment often turned against pro-immigration policy is reversed when those same people see people that did “get in line and wait their turn” treated so cruelly.
one thing I worry about is that Miller views the backlash against Biden on immigration in public opinion--when Biden didn't even actually ever restore asylum or get very far legalizing anyone--as history vindicating him & licensing him to ignore public opinion now
