As you've astutely mentioned before, the Trumpy approach exploits the vulnerabilities of the press. To me, this is one of those vulnerabilities.

It's generally good to give people the benefit of the doubt -- and assume they mean what they say -- but the press takes this to comical extremes.

The "people who ought to know better" do know better.

They just happen to agree with trump, are themselves mostly anti-Semites (or don't care about anti-Semitism, at best), but are mostly very happy to do some good old Muslim-Bashing.
