If at least they'd build something new that's interesting... Was in Berlin a few weeks ago. And they are quarters on the outskirts where tons of interesting 100+ year old houses have been replaced with variations of the same "white / long grey windows / 3 boxes" house. Meh.

That house is gorgeous and all I can think is that that is RealtorSpeak for “this house needs $250k in work to be livable.” Mold, structural issues, etc. maybe? Because that house is gorgeous and anyone who would tear it down simply because they prefer a McMansion should be publicly shamed.

I think it’s because I grew up in the 70s, and spent a lot of time in houses with this aesthetic (albeit much smaller), and they generally had wall to wall carpet by then, except for linoleum in the kitchen and tile in the bathroom.

So my brain is really mixing the 50s and 70s.
