I'm guessing you already checked the sound routing in pavucontrol? Not saying Linux sound isn't still ornary. It IS better, but it's still not good. - ThreadSky

Next on the list I'd be looking at sound card indices. My assumption is HDMI (since it supports sound) is hijacking things?

Testing with raw alsa is a good step too, to take pulse/pipewire out of the mix.

@smalladventures.net No, I haven't. I don't really know how to do that. I remember trying to look solutions up and coming up emptyhanded and not giving it enough though because I don't usually connect to HDMI.

install pavucontrol with whatever tool you do that with, and run it. You should see a list of output devices. The green checkmark says which one is the default. Start some sound playing, switch to the playback tab and it should be listed and you can tell it which output device to use.

pavucontrol is just a general tool for controlling pulseaudio, it's how I tell my machine to play sound through my bluetooth headphones rather than it's speakers, for example. Or even play music through speakers and a youtube video through the headphones.

If you play around with it more I'm sure you'll figure out how it works. This routing stuff is the good part of Linux's sound system.
