It is Black History Month and each day this month I am sharing stories from Canada's Black history.
Today it is the story of Jeremiah Jones. He fought for Canada during the First World War but it took a century for him to receive recognition for his bravery.

On June 19, 1916, despite being 58, he enlisted as a private with the 106th Battalion. To enlist, he lied about his age and said he was 39.
On Feb. 9, 1917, he was in France with The Royal Canadian Regiment.

The remaining soldiers surrendered to him and he had them carry the machine gun back to Canadian lines.

His commanding officer recommended Jones for the Distinguished Conduct Medal but he never received it.
Years later, Senator Calvin Ruck continually lobbied for Jones to receive the DCM but he was unsuccessful.

On Feb. 22, 2010, six years after Senator Ruck died, the Canadian Government posthumously awarded Jones the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service.
