The first takes place in 1969 when a ship carrying Volvos sustained water damage. According to the story, the Volvos were dumped without permission after they became damaged.

In another version of that story, they had permission to dump the Volvos.
Of the two stories (1969/1980s) most believe the 1980s version is the true story.

In 2008, the Geological Survey of Canada also confirmed the Volvos were in the Basin but counted 26 of them.

This is to ensure that when ships are in the harbour and they drop anchor, they don't accidently hook onto a Volvo long since discarded.
