Laura Ingersoll was born on Sept. 13, 1775. In 1797, she married James Secord, a merchant from Queenston. They eventually settled in that area where they had six daughters and one son.
During the War of 1812, James served with the First Lincoln Militia.

At the Battle of Queenston Heights, James was shot in the shoulder and knee. Hearing of his injury, Laura went to the battlefield to retrieve him and treat his injuries.
In May 1813, the Americans captured the area and some American soldiers billeted in the Secord home.

In the evening of June 21, 1813, while Laura was caring for James, she heard the Americans in another room planning their attack on the British at Beaver Dams.
James was unable to make the journey to warn the British, so Laura resolved to do it herself.

Laura set out to reach British Lt. James FitzGibbon. She began her journey through forested terrain, while avoiding American sentries.
Some versions have her leading a cow as a cover story, stating to American sentries she was leading it back home.

She eventually reached a Mohawk camp and told them what she was doing and they led her the rest of the way through the forest to FitzGibbon's headquarters. She told him of the attack, giving the British the chance to ready themselves days before the battle was to happen.

At the Battle of Beaver Dams on June 24, 1813, the British and their First Nations allies defeated the Americans despite being outnumbered. Over 500 US troops, including their wounded commander Charles G. Boerstler, were captured.
